Title: Design and Development of a Graphical Monitoring Interface for Circular Maintenance Decisions in Underwater Cleaning Robots at WEDA Robotics
Subject: Computer science, Embedded systems, Robotics, Informationsdesign, Innovation och design, Industrial Systems
Level: Advanced
Description:

Background

Industrial products can generate operational and condition-related data, but the data must be captured, structured, communicated, and visualized effectively to support maintenance and circular strategy decisions.
WEDA Robotics develops underwater cleaning robots used in demanding industrial environments. Together with Mälardalen University (MDU), WEDA is investigating how operational data from its robots and control systems can be collected and used to support maintenance and circular lifecycle decisions. An important next step is to develop a graphical monitoring interface that transforms operational data into understandable and actionable information for different users.

Aim

The aim of this master's thesis is to identify data and information requirements for maintenance and circular lifecycle decisions and to design and develop a graphical monitoring interface for WEDA's underwater cleaning robots. The thesis should demonstrate how operational data can be generated, transferred, stored, processed, and visualized to support data-driven decision-making.

Possible Research Questions

RQ1: What data and information requirements to support maintenance and circular strategy decisions for underwater cleaning robots?

RQ2: What data-structuring requirements are needed to transform operational data into information suitable for graphical decision support?

RQ3: How can a graphical monitoring interface be designed and developed to support maintenance decisions and circular strategies?

Expected Outcomes

The main outcome will be a functional prototype of a graphical monitoring interface for WEDA's underwater cleaning robots.

The thesis is also expected to deliver:

  • Identify user and maintenance decision-support requirements.

  • A structured mapping of data sources, communication, storage, and visualization requirements.

  • An evaluation of the developed interface with relevant users.

  • Recommendations for future integration with WEDA's actual monitoring system.

  • Insights into how graphical monitoring can support maintenance and circular lifecycle strategies.

Comments:

The thesis will be conducted in collaboration with WEDA Robotics and Mälardalen University within the SmartCircle research project.
The work involves developing and evaluating a proof-of-concept graphical interface using available or simulated operational data. Recommendations for future integration with the actual robot monitoring system will be part of the thesis.
